Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will

A. Know and understand

Demonstrate Advanced knowledge and understanding of contemporary issues in pastoral leadership including the methods and standards of professional, safe and ethical practice.

B. Be able to

1. Examine theological frameworks, contemporary models and disciple making in church planting

2. Interpret the relationship between migration, ethnicity, cultural diversity, and church life and witness in Australia

3. Demonstrate skills in leading churches through change, revitalisation and transition

4. Present Research-Aware evidence-based perspectives on contemporary issues in pastoral leadership

C. Be in a position to

1. Applying Advanced perspectives from ‘Contemporary Issues in Pastoral Leadership’ to ministry practice as a reflective practitioner

Background Issues in Church and Society (Week 1)

1. Changes in church and society that make these five areas critical for pastoral ministry and church life today

Church Planting (Weeks 2 – 3)

2. Theological framework and Biblical insights for church planting

3. Cultural analysis and research in church planting

4. Contextualisation and church planting

5. Models of planting, and models of church plants in post Christendom

6. Pioneering leadership (qualities, competencies, tasks, practicalities)

7. Disciplemaking in church planting

Ethnic and Cultural Diversity (Weeks 4 – 6)

8. Students will be required to spend 2-3 hours researching the ethnic and cultural diversity within the suburb in which they live or minister (present or intended).

10. Ministry, cultural and ethnic diversity: theology and practice

11. Ministry, cultural and ethnic diversity: models of church and ministry

Family and Children's Ministry (Including Intergenerational and Young Adult Ministry) (Weeks 7 – 9)

12. Biblical perspectives on children: introduction to theology of childhood; implications for ministry

13. Children and God: Overview of moral and faith development; survey of a variety of perspectives such as Fowler, Westerhoff, and Buckland

14. Children and the church: history of children in the church; recent trends

15. Discipleship and children in an intergenerational context (integrated, holistic and intergenerational discipleship)

16. The role, contribution and impact of family in ministry with children, youth and young adults

17. Navigating transitions and faith
