Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will

A. Know and understand

Demonstrate Foundational knowledge and understanding of sociolinguistics in cross cultural ministry

B. Be able to

1. Discuss sociolinguistic factors which affect language use
2. Demonstrate Foundational skills in using sociolinguistic principles and methods for cross cultural ministry
3. Present Organised evidence-based perspectives on sociolinguistics for cross cultural ministry
 

C. Be in a position to

1. Relating perspectives and skills from ‘Introduction to Sociolinguistics for Cross-Cultural Ministry’ to ministry practice

Content

Major topics covered include

  1. language variation, including the issues in defining languages, dialects and varieties, and issues of language and identity and social interaction
  2. cultural differences and values in communication
  3. language use in multilingual speech communities including multilingualism and diglossia; language attitudes and language use; code switching and code choice; factors in language maintenance, spread, shift, and death; pidgins and creoles
  4. language planning and policies, including EGIDS (Expanded Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale) and SUM (Sustainable Use Model) and Participatory Methods
  5. overview of sociolinguistic survey purposes, tools and procedures

At each point, emphasis is given to the application of the principles to the cross-cultural ministry situations in which graduates will typically be working.
