Prof Peter Riddell elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities

Australian College of Theology Senior Research Fellow and Melbourne School of Theology faculty member Prof Peter Riddell has been elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities – the highest honour for achievement in and contribution to the humanities in Australia.

“I congratulate Prof Peter Riddell on his election as Fellow. He exemplifies the outstanding research being undertaken at the Australian College of Theology,” said Prof Roger Lewis, Chair of the ACT Board of Directors. “Prof Riddell’s technical expertise in Islam, especially on our doorstep in South-East Asia, provides a matchless resource in interfaith relations for Australia,” Prof Lewis said.

Prof Riddell was recognised by the Australian Academy of Humanities for his research on Islam in Southeast Asia, Qur’anic commentary, interfaith relations, Malay commentary on the Qur’an, vernacularisation of Islam in the Malay-Indonesian world, and historical development of Qur’anic commentary.

“It gives me great pleasure to see Prof Riddell’s excellent research recognised in this way,” said Prof James Dalziel, Dean and CEO of the ACT. “This achievement is a great credit to Prof Riddell, Melbourne School of Theology and the ACT,” Prof Dalziel said.

Prof Riddell has lectured at the Australian National University, the Institut Pertanian Bogor (Indonesia), SOAS University of London and the London School of Theology, where he served as Professor of Islamic Studies. He was invited as Visiting Professor at L’Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes/Sorbonne (Paris) in May/June, 2015. He has published widely on Southeast Asia, Islam and Christian-Muslim Relations. Apart from his own books, he has been contributing editor for 12 other volumes.

The Australian College of Theology is Australia’s largest higher education institution for theological education with over 3,000 students and 17 affiliated colleges, including the Melbourne School of Theology.
