Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will

A. Know and understand

a) To provide candidates with the opportunity to be exposed to a range of diaconal ministries; b) To enable candidates to experience some ministry themselves, with supervised reflection, taking diaconal perspectives into account.

Content

Note: Students may take two only of subjects PC443?447/643?644, DM440?442/640?642 and EM441/641 This subject is intended to give the student involvement in diaconal ministries in church through observation, participation and reflection related to major areas of regular pastoral ministry. Section A: Theoretical Study A minimum of 15 hours classes/seminars dealing with the following, from the perspective of diaconal ministry: 1 Principles of pastoral care of people in a local congregation, and in the wider community. 2 Visitation of church members, families, the sick, and those with fringe contacts with the church. 3 The planning and conduct of programs connected with the diaconal ministries in and of either a local congregation, or a Christian agency working in the community church, and the pastoral opportunities they present. Satisfactory completion of PC402/602 (Pastoral Care), if the latter is taken from a diaconal perspective, will exempt candidates from undertaking this study separately. Section B: Field Work EITHER not less then 200 hours? experience (with supervision) in a local congregation or Christian agency OR a period of continuous residence (with supervision) of not less than six weeks duration in a local congregation or Christian agency. In either case, The experience and reflection is to be related to diaconal ministries, and a) Approximately 120 hours are to be spent in actual ministry, including participation (where appropriate) in the conduct of church services, visitation, and involvement in some aspects of the congregation?s or agency?s service to and in its community. b) Approximately 60 hours are to be spent in preparation, and writing up verbatims for supervisors. c) Approximately 20 hours are to consist of reflection upon practical experience, at least 5 hours on an individual basis, with an approved supervisor. Such reflection must include comments from agency or local congregation leaders.
