Content
The four GLF units will be taught in three groups, with GLF B and C forming a common content domain.
GLF A is designed to help students appreciate the shape and nature of the Gospel and its influence on the way leadership is exercised within the context of cities, families and churches. Keller’s (2012) ‘Centre Church’ will be used to frame much of this discussion, supplemented by other relevant sources. A proposed breakdown of content for this first unit is summarised below:
- The Gospel: Gospel theology and Gospel renewal
- The city: Gospel contextualisation, city vision and cultural engagement
- The family: marriage and parenting
- The church: missional community, integrative ministry and movement dynamics
- Mentoring training and leadership development
GLF B and C are focused on leadership skills development. Students will be introduced to ten foundational leadership skills that have been found lacking in leaders in both secular and Christian contexts. These skills will be introduced using a developmental framework common within the field of leadership development. In distinction to Kolb’s Experiential Learning Model, Whetton and Cameron’s (2011) framework requires students to assess, learn, analyse, practice and then apply skills-based content. The students in this course will critique the compatibility of the leadership frameworks introduced from a Christian Worldview, along with specialist Christian leadership research. The major content areas proposed for students in GLF B and C are summarised below:
- Self-awareness
- Managing personal stress
- Building relationships by communicating supportively
- Solving problems analytically and creatively
- Gaining power and influence
- Managing conflict
- Empowering and delegating
- Motivating others
- Building effective teams, teamwork and conducting meetings
- Leading positive change
GLF D is aimed at developing student foundations for improved personal effectiveness. Students will be introduced to a framework of Gospel-centred productivity, and will spend a significant portion of their time reflecting on completed assessments and personal reflections across previous units, as they form their personal Life Plan. This unit will draw upon Perman’s (2014) ‘What’s Best Next?’, but will be supplemented with other resources. The proposed content for this last unit is summarised below:
- The significance of Christian productivity
- Pastoral burnout and contemporary research
- Foundations of Christian productivity
- Defining and then setting up your life to prioritise ‘first things’
- Creating space for ‘first things’
- Managing projects, actions and daily workflow
Throughout their time in these units, students will be required to participate as an observer or pastoral leader (as appropriate) in their local church Session (senior leadership team) and pastoral staff meetings. In GLF A, students will negotiate the development of an approved church project which advances Jesus’ whole-of-life discipleship agenda. This project will be implemented during GLF B and GLF C. In these units, students will receive group-based coaching from their teacher, and individual mentoring from a trained pastoral leader of their choice. Further, students will deliver an oral presentation and submit a written paper reflecting on their experiences over the recent semester during one-day retreats held at the end of each term.
