Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will

A. Know and understand

1. Demonstrate Advanced knowledge and understanding of, and the research underlying, challenges in contemporary pastoral leadership 

B. Be able to

1. Examine the theoretical and methodological issues in evaluating contemporary mission and ministry 

2. Demonstrate skill in utilising diverse scholarship and learning in Developing a leadership style and skills appropriate to addressing the challenges in contemporary pastoral leadership

3. Present Research-Aware evidence-based perspectives on challenges in contemporary pastoral leadership 

C. Be in a position to

1. Applying Advanced perspectives and skills from ‘Pastoring in the 21st Century’ to ministry practice and Christian living as a reflective practitioner

Content

The unit is made up of the following sections:

  1. Ministry in the 21st Century: cultural challenges of the 21st century; the shape of church in the 21st century; a biblical theology of 21st century ministry; pastoring in the 21st century.
  2. Processing and Facilitating Change in the 21st Century: understanding diverse church cultures; developing a personal philosophy and theology of ministry and change; principles of change; models for managing change; pastors as change agents.
  3. Pastoral Health for the 21st Century: understanding the health hazards of 21st century pastoral ministry (for example, stress, secularism, sex and success); strategies for building intentional spiritual, relational and emotional health in the face of these hazards.
