Content
This Issues in Mission Leadership: B unit builds on the first two units to continue to emphasise the inner life and character of the leader, while focusing more on developing their leadership skills in a cross cultural context as they lead and mentor others. The content centres on four issues, and their particular implications for cross cultural leaders –
The ‘Darkside’ of Leadership
Using psychological and biblical perspectives this theme develops practical insights on how our own particular leadership effectiveness is shaped and influenced by things that may lie ‘beneath’ the surface of our lives. Some of these things we may know about; others we may not. This theme seeks to address questions like – Do we really know ourselves well? Do we really understand how we come across to others? Are we able to grow through areas of personal weakness, or do we tend to deny them, or blame others? How can we find healing and renewal from those things which might be hindering our leadership effectiveness?
The Tough Tasks of Leadership
This theme will explore, analyse and biblically reflect on those aspects of leadership responsibility that can often create the greatest personal tension in a leader’s life. Specific areas include conflict management, confrontation, and dispute resolution. The applied aspect of this theme will explore areas such as the impact of personality and cultural diversity on these ‘tough’ tasks of leadership.
Leading in Complexity
This theme covers the complexity of leadership in the context of cultural, generational, and gender diversity. The primary focus is upon –
- The impact of culture on the way we lead and are lead,
- The dynamics of how gender and generation influence the way we lead and the way others follow,
- ‘Best practices’ to maximise leadership effectiveness in the light of the uniqueness we personally bring to our leadership,
- ‘Best practices’ to draw out the best in others, and help them manage the complexities in which they find themselves.
Spiritual Warfare
This theme is aimed at addressing ONE area of Spiritual Warfare - namely, the need for cross cultural leaders to be acutely aware of and personally intuitive to –
- The ways in which the enemy seeks specifically to undermine and attack leaders,
- The ways in which the Holy Spirit has equipped leaders to deal with spiritual oppression and attack in their own lives, and the lives of those they lead.
There is a strong focus on biblical reflection, cultural perspectives, the role of prayer, and the importance of community (that is the church and the support and role of others in the team) in maintaining a victorious and healthy spirituality in the context of spiritual battles.
The relationships of the leader
- All the areas of focus in this unit are deliberately centred in the relational aspects of cross cultural leadership,
- Mentoring of self and others,
- Peer group interaction.
