Content
This Issues in Mission Leadership: A Unit builds on the Foundations Unit in developing additional aspects of leadership in a cross cultural context. There is further emphasis on the inner life of the leader, and the development of mentoring skills. The content centres on Three Major Themes impacting cross cultural leadership –
When Expectations Exceed Capacity
This theme unpacks in practical ways some of the reasons why so many leaders feel as though they do not have the capacity to meet expectations. These expectations may be
- Internal,
- Organisational,
- Cultural, or
- Based upon personality or life and family history.
Practical responses to the expectations placed upon leaders.
When Core Values Collide
This theme will explore the specific challenges that leaders face when certain core values are on an apparent collision course with other organisational values. Examples of the conflicts explored might be –
- The clash of cultural world views, preferences and styles,
- Team versus individual priorities,
- Creative and innovative strategies versus the team strategy,
- Grace versus Accountability and Relationship failures,
- Servant leadership versus actually being able to ‘lead’,
- Central organisational authority versus local autonomy,
- When values are interpreted differently in different teams or areas of mission activity,
- Different perspectives on key cross cultural mission issues – e.g. Leadership and agency structures, Church Planting,, Contextualisation, Partnership, etc.
Globalised or Just Global
This theme explores the specific challenges that are part of becoming a globalised international movement – including the ‘internationalisation’ process, the obstacles, challenges and exciting opportunities in becoming a more internationalised movement, including –
- Serving under leaders from a different cultural background,
- Mobilising people into mission from different cultures,
- Multicultural teams and an intercultural leadership mix,
- Internationalisation and changing organisational structures,
- How ‘my culture’ impacts engaging in the ‘internationalisation’ process,
The relationships of the leader:
- Mentoring of self and others,
- Nurturing and maintaining healthy organisational relationships,
- Peer group interaction on the unit themes.
