Content
Section A: Theoretical Study
Introduction to cultural and religious background and core issues impacting ministry practice in fieldwork destination. Specific preparation for life and ministry in destination including strategies to develop cultural intelligence. These will include, but are not limited to:
- Cross-cultural differences in behaviour, values, and assumptions;
- Introductory analysis of culture(s) of the people(s) in the cross-cultural ministry context;
- The religious beliefs and practices of the local people in the cross-cultural ministry context;
- Challenges encountered in cross-cultural life and ministry;
- Attitudes and behaviours that contribute to adjustment to a life in a cross-cultural ministry context;
- Approaches to ministry in a cross-cultural context.
Section B: Fieldwork
An experience of the following:
An immersion cross-cultural ministry trip of not less than 3 weeks residence in a culture other than the candidate’s own.
Conditions:
- The experience is to be approved by the candidate’s college.
- The candidate is to work under supervision of a person experienced in living in both the candidate’s culture, and the culture in which the candidate is working in field experience.
- At least 100 hours is to be spent in direct contact with people of the culture concerned, in active participation and communication, as well as observation.
- The candidate is to participate in ministry efforts and daily life among the people of the culture being visited.
- The candidate is to keep a daily journal while away, recording key experiences, observations and personal reflections.
