Provision of academic and study skills support services, including English language support
Students are encouraged to view ACT’s Student Support Services page for information about academic and study skills support services available. In addition, the following are services available at Sydney Missionary and Bible College:
Croydon Campus and Roberts-Dale (Croydon Park) Campus
- One faculty member is allocated Learning Support as part of their role. This faculty member coordinates Academic English and Academic Skills Support.
- The librarians conduct library tutorials.
- All faculty are available to provide one-on-one assistance to students in the subjects they are teaching.
- Students who are identified through admission processes or other means as needing further assistance are offered tutorial assistance.
- A series of Academic Skills tutorials are offered to all students during first semester. These are used to help identify students who require further tutorial assistance.
- A series of seven online Academic Skills tutorials has been created and is available for all students to access via the learning management system.
- One-on-one academic English assistance is available to students from a non-English speaking background. This assistance is provided by faculty or competent student peers with backgrounds in teaching and/or English.
- One-on-one tutorial assistance is available upon request, or when a need is identified by faculty, to students with learning difficulties or whose previous education did not extend beyond School Certificate (Year 10). This assistance is provided by faculty or competent student peers with backgrounds in teaching and/or English.
- The ‘SMBC Essay and Assignment Essentials’ booklet provides a comprehensive guide to essay and assignment writing at SMBC and includes copies of assessment criteria sheets for all levels of study. All students are provided with a copy of this booklet and required to read it prior to submitting an assessment.
- Face-to-face library tutorials on using Research Databases and EndNote are conducted regularly.
- Online library tutorials about accessing resources, referencing and other study skills are available via the student learning management system.
Provision of counselling services
ACT and its colleges have a strong commitment to student wellbeing. Students are encouraged to view ACT’s Student Support Services page for information about personal and counselling support services available, as well as links to relevant ACT policies and processes in place to provide support to students. In addition, the following services are available to students studying at Sydney Missionary and Bible College:
Croydon Campus and Roberts-Dale (Croydon Park) Campus
- There is a high level of faculty-student interaction at SMBC and any faculty member may provide personal support within this context.
- Students are engaged in Fellowship Groups. Fellowship Group Leaders provide a key support to students.
- The SMBC Director of Community and Student Care, Community and Student Care Co-Ordinator, and Vice Principal provide further supports to students through particular responsibility for the pastoral oversight of students at college, but all faculty are involved and address matters with students as the need arises.
- Personal support and counselling often takes place informally as a result of the high level of faculty-student interaction at SMBC.
- Students may also seek personal counselling from faculty members as needs arise and it is required.
- Referrals can be provided for complex support matters. Sydney Missionary and Bible College College refer to external providers. A panel of qualified external counsellors to refer students to is maintained by the Director of
Community and Student Care, particularly where mental health support is needed.
Library
The library provides a wide range of digital resources, as well as a physical collection of over 40,000 monographs. Information about the library and services are available here.

Residential accommodation for students
The Chief Operating Officer and Registrar Team support students with their accommodation arrangements.
On-campus accommodation is available for full-time single students, families, and married couples. A small number of ensuite rooms are available on campus and part-time students attending intensives may make a reservation for the duration of their intensive.
Self-catered accommodation within the local area is managed by the Chief Operating Officer, who maintains relationships with these parties, including local agents. From time to time, when the College is made aware of off-campus accommodation available for students it refers accordingly.
